From Mattaseunk Dam, all islands down to Indian Island in Old Town are property of the Penobscot Indian Nation. Prior permission from the tribe is required to step onto them. Frequent riffles contribute to the ride, mostly Class I or less at low water, some higher to Class II in spring and after heavy rain.     Two miles below the dam, Mattaseunk Stream, Rapids-at-the-mouth stream, comes in river left. The mouth of the Mattawamkeag River, At the place of the elevated gravel bar, comes in river left 5 miles down from the dam. Two miles on, Fire Island Rapids (Class I/II) precede Houston Island.  Two miles below Houston, at 9 miles for the segment, are opportunities to camp river right or take out river left at the Winn boat launch.  The land owner of the campsite (permission granted but campsite not made yet) on river right is Mike Lambert. The site is just opposite the north tip of the Brown Islands in North Chester
